The object of art, according to Francois Delsarte, is "to crystallize emotion into thought." Is this a direct response to Jeff Edwards's CURO exhibition? Maybe not, but it could have been. Jeff also hopes to use art to create emotionally-derived contemplation. He explains that his sculpture is intended to elicit a direct emotional response from the viewer, which he hopes will draw attention to "incongruities in her or his social thought."
Skeptical? Sorry, fellow English majors: Jeff's socially conscious sculpture is not up for interpretation. He believes that the artist's privilege is to "defend, promote, and explain" his or her own creations. To forfeit this opportunity, he cautions less vocal colleagues, is to leave one's work open to misinterpretation and even exploitation.
The pieces featured in this issue are only the beginning of a more long-term goal. Jeff reports that he plans to continue the type of sculpture featured in this issue to further pursue the range of "human emotional experience," and to develop a "true understanding of self."
