Conducting Recital: Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis

by Eric Koperda

On 26 February 2001, Eric Koperda presented a conducting recital as part of the 2001 CURO symposium.  Forty other students from the School of Music joined Eric on stage for the performance.  Because it normally is not possible for an undergraduate to major in Conducting, the Honors Program was instrumental in providing this unique learning opportunity.  Under the guidance of Professor Allen Crowell, the Haywood Professor of Choral Music and Director of Choral Activities at UGA, Eric and the musicians spent three months rehearsing.  This concert was the culmination of Eric's Honors Thesis project.

Three separate ensembles appeared on the program.  First, an eight member chamber choir performed four short unaccompanied works in Latin.  Then, a seven member contemporary instrumental ensemble performed the suite from Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale drama.  Finally, a twenty-five member string orchestra presented Vaughan Williams' well-known Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.  Due to server space limitations, only the Vaughan Williams is available for online viewing.
